Nineteenth century photograph collection, 1865-[ca. 1899]

Collection contains primarily photographs, with a few stereographs and portraits. Nearly all the views are of Brooklyn, some of Long Island and Queens. Photographers represented include George B. Brainerd, Elias Lewis, Jr., Adrian V. Martense, and A.R. Young. Many of the prints also have negatives. Photographs are identified.

The Center for Brooklyn History was founded in 1863 by Henry Pierrepont (1808–1888) as the Long Island Historical Society, with a charter from the New England Historical Society in Boston. In 1985, the society changed its name to the Brooklyn Historical Society (BHS). In 2020, the BHS made an agreement to merge with the Brooklyn Public Library. As of October 2020, the organization is now part of Brooklyn Public Library and is known as the Center for Brooklyn History....
